Your smoke alarm needs cleaning!
Research suggests only 45 per cent of properties attended by fire services had smoke alarms and, of those, only 31 per cent were working.
Keep your smoke alarm in good working order to protect your family.
- Test it each month – push the test button with a broom handle to make sure it beeps.
- Clean the alarm with the vacuum cleaner.
- Change the battery at least once a year. Make a habit of doing it when you adjust your clock for daylight saving.
Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery
At the end of daylight saving each year, change your smoke alarm battery with a long life battery at teh same time you readjust your clock. House fires occur more frequently in winter, make sure you start winter with a working smoke alarm.
Hard-wired smoke alarms still have a back up battery and it should be changed as well.
Smoke alarms don’t live forever
Smoke alarms have a lifespan of around 10 years. You should replace them before their use by date.
Most smoke alarms have a use-by date printed on them. If your alarm is still beeping after you have changed its battery, it should be replaced.
